SUMMARY:Poia Lake Cave Trip - Montana
DESCRIPTION:Poia Lake Cave (Montana): Hey everyone! I am opening up 4 addit
ional spots for an advanced day-trip to explore Poia Lake Cave in Glacier
National Park. This cave is ~3.2km in total travel distance\, it is wet\,
and requires some squeezing (a decent squeeze/belly crawl to enter the cav
 e) and climbing. Dates: Leave Calgary Friday night (June 26) around 6:00pm
\, cave all day Saturday (June 27)\, and head back Sunday. We will sort ou
t camping on the Friday and Sunday night at a later time. Some options: A)
stay at a campground in Babb (wild camping across the border may not be a
n option as it is either in park or on reserve land). B) Camp CND side and
drive out early Saturday morning and late Saturday night. C) Book the bac
kcountry sites and do it as an overnight trip. There are lots of logistica
l variations that could be thrown together. Once I have confirmed group nu
mbers\, I can finalize this planning. The Cave Permit: Completely free! We
will grab it Saturday morning at the Many Glacier Ranger Station. If we c
hoose to backcountry camp\, It is 14 or 17$ a night (park ranger was uncle
ar). The Hike: This is a 20+ kilometer round-trip trek while carrying fair
ly heavy gear bags. The Cave: There is about 3.2 kilometers of cave to exp
lore. Time Commitment: Expect a highly physically demanding day from start
to finish. Reports put this trip at 10 to 12 hours car-to-car\, but with
a larger group\, our total time will likely increase by a few hours. Pleas
e ensure you are prepared for a long\, grueling day. ⚠️ CRUCIAL VEHICL
E\, PASS &amp\; SHUTTLE PLAN ⚠️ Entering the park is very expensive fo
r Canadians due to a new $100 USD per-person international surcharge on to
p of the vehicle day pass. However\, I have an America the Beautiful Non-R
esident Pass\, which completely covers 1 private vehicle and everyone ridi
ng inside it for free. If the other vehicle had a pass as well\, this woul
d be the simplest logistically. Alternatively\, we could potentially park
in Babb and shuttle (I can not confirm prior to though is this will be pos
sible). Logistically\, this plan checks out based on the latest 2026 park
access policies I have found. However\, things can always pop up or change
unexpectedly when dealing with international travel. I am working with li
mited initial information\, so I will be directly contacting the specific
ranger station later this week to get more insights\, however things can s
till happen. Gear &amp\; Cave Conditions: Wet &amp\; Cold: The cave is qui
te wet! Neoprene socks are highly recommended. I have a few extra pairs if
anyone needs to borrow some. SRT &amp\; Ropes: Single Rope Technique (SRT
) gear is not mandatory\, and there will be a hand line in a section of th
e cave. There is a potential rappel at the end of the cave\, so it is wort
h bringing your vertical kit just in case! General Requirements: Passport
for the border\, a low-profile drag bag for the tight entry squeeze\, and
clean caving gear (thoroughly washed and dry) to pass the park's bat safet
y screen (WNS). Backup Plans (Plan B &amp\; C): If park permits fall throu
gh or weather shifts\, I will put together a few alternative plans. Likely
in the Ferine area. This may require 4x4 access. Additional options can b
e explored. How to Sign Up: I have space for 4 more people. Please sign up
on the ASS website portal. Please ONLY sign up if you are absolutely cert
ain you want to do this. This is going to be logistically challenging to p
lan. Once you are signed up on the portal\, I will drop you into our exist
ing group chat to finalize the finer details!
